Overweight & obesity in Australia

Recently, the number of overweight people in the world has been increasing. This problem is very serious, because overweight influence our health. It also influences the situation of each country.
In 2001, about 42% of Australian males are overweight and about 15% are obese. In 2004 -05, both of the percentage increased. In addition, those of females also increased. On the other hand, the number of normal males decreased from 41% to 37%.
The causes are too little exercise and liking sweets. Most fat people like sweets very much, but they don’t like exercise. So the number of overweight and obese people is increasing in the world, including Australia.
“Inactivity is one of the main reasons why two-thirds of men and over one half of women in the 45 to 64 age group are overweight or obese,” says Associate professor Gavin Turrell. “Being inactive increases the risk of obesity, chronic disease, diabetes, come cancers, arthritis and depression.”
He also said “if the 45 to 64 age group don’t become more active and lose more weight, they will compromise their health, their quality of life and place a great burden on the health care system.” To improve the situation, people often should exercise such as running, swimming or sports, and must not eat sweets too much.
